Slavery in China

Slavery in ancient China
compared to slavery in modern age.


Foxconn is the biggest supplier of Apple creating iphones, ipads, ipods and factory in Shenzhen
It has approximately 400 000 employees in 2011. Between 60 and 80 hours of overtime a month is normal. The legal limit of overtime in China is 36 hours a month. Some of the employees says that if they miss targets they have to work through their lunch breaks to make up for it. Foxconn claims that all overtime is voluntary. A typical working day would be a 12 hour shift starting at 8.30am and ending at 8.30pm.
Apple's financial results for its fiscal first quarter of 2011 showed record revenue of $26.74bn and record net quarterly profit of $6bn worldwide.
■ It sold 4.13m Macs during the quarter, 16.24m iPhones, 19.45m iPods and 7.33m iPads.
■ 15 million iPads were sold worldwide in 2010, with up to 45m iPads expected to be sold in 2011.
■ Demand for the iPad 2 has exceeded expectations since its launch in the UK on 25 March.

Terracotta army
Built by the first Emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang. The purpose was to protect him in his afterlife.
Current estimates are that in the three pits containing the Terracotta Army there were over 8,000 soldiers, 130 chariots with 520 horses and 150 cavalry horses, the majority of which are still buried in the pits. The tomb was made to represent the entire world, including rivers and seas made of mercury, ceiling decorated with representations of the heavens.The tomb was built by condemned men, about 700 000 of them. Most of them were craftsmen, artisans and engineers. It took about 37 years to build.
